Celebrating 160 Years of Arctic Shipbuilding Excellence

4.3.2025

On March 4, Helsinki Shipyard commemorates a remarkable milestone: 160 years since our founding. From pioneering early iron-hulled ships to delivering more than half of the world’s icebreaker fleet, we have consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible in Arctic shipbuilding.

Origins and Founding Vision

Our story began with Judge Adolf Törngren’s petition to the Helsinki Magistrate in August 1864. Recognizing Finland’s growing need for advanced ship repair and construction facilities, he wrote:

“To the Very Honourable Helsinki Magistrate. For a long time now there has been the need for an appropriate dry dock and repair facility for iron ships, not only for the city of Helsinki, but for all of Finland. So that I may be able at least to some extent, and to the best of my ability eliminate this deficiency, I consider it necessary to request that the area of land in the Punavuori district be handed over to me, with its shoals and rocky skerries, to establish and maintain a shipyard, and to build the necessary machine shop. It should be taken into account along with this petition, the benefits which the city and its inhabitants will receive.”

The Imperial Finnish Senate granted the letters patent on March 4, 1865, and our shipyard was born.

A Legacy of Leadership

Throughout the decades, we have delivered over 500 vessels for international waters, established cutting-edge infrastructure, and fostered world-class expertise in ice-class shipbuilding. Our commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability has earned us a reputation as one of the foremost Arctic shipbuilders in the world.

Celebratory Performance

To mark this historic occasion, we are delighted to share the Helsinki Academic Male Choir KYL’s performance of “The Shipbuilder’s March,” first published in 1995. Composed by Olavi Vauhkonen (1925–2018) and arranged by Veikko Lenkkeri (1929–2018) and Ville Kervinen (1976– ), this piece captures the unwavering spirit that has guided our shipyard for 160 years. Thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout our journey. We look forward to many more decades of developing innovative vessels, expanding Arctic capabilities, and upholding the proud tradition of Helsinki Shipyard.
